Architecture is not merely the construction of walls, but the curation of the silence within them. The Monolith House was conceived as a dialoguebetween heavy material and invisible air. In thisproject, we explored the concept of Ma—the Japaneseword for the space between things.
By utilizing large-scale poured concrete and strategically placedvoids, we allowed the natural environment of theKyoto hills to penetrate the interior volumes. Thestructure acts as a sophisticated frame, capturing thechanging light and the rhythmic movement of thesurrounding cedar forest throughout the day.
